Welcome to the Vanguard Writing Center scheduling system. To get started, register for an account by clicking the link to the left. If you already have an account, please log-in to book an appointment.

*We do take walk-ins as we have availability, but it's best to make an appointment to ensure a consultation. Either way, please stop by anytime! We are located in Smith 113.

What to bring to a writing center appointment:

  • A printed copy of your outline or draft
  • Your professor's directions for the assignment (either printed or accessible on Canvas)
  • Specific questions or concerns you have about the assignment

What to expect at a writing center appointment:

  • A qualified writing consultant will read your paper on the spot. It's helpful for them to see your instructor's prompt and to hear your specific concerns before they read.
  • You will then sit down with your consultant and collaborate on ways to improve your writing.
  • You will leave with 5-10 pieces of feedback to improve your assignment.
  • Your appointment will typically last 30-35 minutes.
  • Please allow for an hour if your paper is longer than five pages.

The Vanguard Writing Center exists to help any student in any class at any stage of the writing process. You do not need a full draft to get help at the writing center. In fact, sometimes it's better to meet with a writing consultant to discuss your outline or thesis statement before you write your entire paper. You can always come back again for editing help when your draft is finished!

Please note: We are not a proofreading service. While your writing consultant will check for grammar errors and citation format problems in your paper, they will also be assessing the strength of your argument, the clarity of your ideas, the organization of your paper, and adherence to your instructor's requirements. We will help you edit your paper, but we do not correct every mistake in a paper. Instead, our goal is to show you how to identify and correct mistakes on your own.

Graduate and SPS students:

You may book an in-person appointment or request a video conference if you cannot make it to campus. You may also use our email service for graduate and SPS students by sending your paper to GPSwritingcenter@vanguard.edu.
